The CMHC’s Role In Canada’s Housing Boom
Boyd Erman, Reporter, Globe and Mail
Canada’s housing market has been on a tear of late, with some suggesting it risks becoming a bubble. There is little doubt that the CMHC’s growing role in the mortgage market has supported housing through the recession and subsequent recovery. The federal mortgage insurer has massively increased in size of late, abetted by the government’s insured-mortgage purchase program. Are there risks to the economy and taxpayers from CMHC’s continued growth? Boyd Erman has written on the CMHC for the Globe and Mail, and will discuss its growing influence on the housing market and the key issues at stake.
Boyd Erman is a long-time business journalist who has worked at Dow Jones, Bloomberg, and the National Post before joining the Globe and Mail. Over the years, his areas of coverage have included economics, monetary policy, debt markets and corporate finance. In addition, he is a regular commentator and guest host on Business News Network. He won a National Newspaper Award for his coverage of the ABCP debacle, and was nominated for an NNA for his work on the BCE Inc. takeover saga. |
