Description:The Financial Crisis: An Evaluation Through the Canadian System of National Accounts

Boulay, Tomas and Wilkinson, Statistics Canada

Senior officials from Statistics Canada will present findings on changes in the economy related to the current Financial Crisis using data from Statistics Canada's Financial and International Accounts. With the increasing focus on wealth in the economy, particularly after last fall's deep drop in stocks, some potential risk factors will be identified. Leading indicators to the Financial Crisis will be evaluated including analysis of Canada's securitization market. Changes in credit flows as well as the government's injection of liquidity into the financial system will be illustrated. The changes in trading of foreign securities and the drop in foreign investment as well as the impact of the dramatic swings in the equity markets will also be considered.

Eric Boulay, Allan Tomas and Joe Wilkinson will be joining us from Statistics Canada to present their findings. Eric Boulay is the Chief, Capital and Financial Account, Balance of Payments Division. Allan Tomas is the Chief, Financial and Wealth Accounts, Income and Expenditure Accounts Division. Joe Wilkinson is an Assistant Director from Income and Expenditure Accounts Division.
