CABE - Moneco- Econtro Summer Policy Conference - Future Indefinite - Policy Reponses to an Uncertain Future
Future Indefinite - Policy Responses to an Uncertain Future
Before the Great Recession, there was confidence in the economic outlook and security in the view that policy responses could address potential fluctuations. However, while Canada has enjoyed reasonably enviable economic performance, particularly relative to the advanced economy peers, the recent declines in both foreign demand and commodity prices, as well as concerns about potential financial imbalances, may signal rougher water ahead. There is considerable uncertainty over how the economy and policy responses will evolve. The CABE summer conference will explore these concerns.
Every August, usually on the last Monday and Tuesday of the month, the Canadian Association for Business Economics (CABE) hosts a policy conference in Kingston, Ontario. This annual gathering has its roots over 50 years ago as it evolved from the Moneco-Econtro conference which had been organized in Kingston since 1961 by a group of business and government economists to discuss the key issues affecting the Canadian economy.
Our leadoff speaker will be William (Bill) White, one of the leading monetary theoreticians of our day (www.williamwhite.ca). Bill was at the Bank of Canada before departing to Europe and even greater international renown at the BIS and OECD. A recent interview on central bank policies (published in German) was entitled “These Strategies will end in Tears”. Bill has published widely on many financial system issues. His web site has a useful presentation list at http://www.williamwhite.ca/publication/presentation.
It promises to be an interesting evening. The conference starts at 17:30 on August 24th. Presentations include:
