The Populist Pivot and the Economic Outlook for 2017

Featuring

Peter Hall

Vice-President and Chief Economist

Export Development Canada (EDC)

For the global economy, last year proved to be yet another in a long series of post-recession disappointments. Patience wore thin enough to see two critical upset votes in the UK and the US – a populist pivot away from the architecture that is being blamed for our secular stagnation. Is this moving us to a new definition of economic reality, or is it a push to make the current system work better? Join the Ottawa Economics Association to hear Peter Hall’s views on this, woven together with EDC’s outlook for 2017, and the implications for Canada’s trade.

EDC is Canada’s trade finance agency, providing financing and insurance solutions locally and around the world to help Canadian companies of any size respond to international business opportunities. As a profitable Crown corporation that operates on commercial principles, EDC works together with private- and public-sector financial institutions to create greater capacity for Canadian companies to engage in trade and investment.
