Financial Market Outlook Panel 2017:

"Making Sense of Manic Markets"

Jointly Presented by the Toronto Association for Business and Economics and the Toronto CFA Society

As political shockwaves reverberate around the world, a panel of three strategists – Jean-Philippe Bry, David Doyle and Bart Melek – will share their views on the market implications of this altered landscape and other key investing themes. Subjects for discussion will include:

• Whether the market's initially rosy interpretation of the Trump administration will persist
• How populism stands to affect economies and markets over the long run
• Whether the recent global economic and earnings uptick is a blip or likely to endure
• If equities are overvalued and whether the multi-decade bond market rally is finally complete
• How Canada is set to fare against this backdrop
• Along with a myriad of other subjects, including asset allocation and regional views

Jean-Philippe Bry
Vice-President, Strategist, Signature Global Asset Management
Jean-Philippe Bry began his career in the investment industry in 1989. Before he joined Signature, he was an international portfolio manager with McLean Budden, a global portfolio manager with Amundi Asset Management in London, England, and global financial portfolio manager with Amundi Asset Management in Paris. Prior to working in the asset management industry, Mr. Bry worked for RBC Capital markets as director of institutional sales in Europe. Jean-Philippe holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Carleton University in Ottawa.

David Doyle
North American Economist and Canadian Strategist, Macquarie Group
David has led coverage of North American Macroeconomics for the past three years and has been part of Macquarie's Global economics and strategy team since 2011. David's unique background allows him to approach structural themes and asset allocation through differentiated frameworks. His thematic work has focused on desynchronized growth in North America, equilibrium long-term interest rates, and the impacts of large oil price declines. Prior to joining Macquarie, he worked on the buy-side, cutting his teeth on macro during the 2008-9 global financial crisis. David is a CFA charterholder and holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master’s of Science in Managerial Economics.

Bart Melek
Global Head of Commodity Strategy, TD Securities
Bart has some twenty years' experience analyzing global precious metals, base metals, energy, and financial markets, as well as North American and global economies. He has several forecasting distinctions and top global rankings to his credit and is also a sought after media source for many leading print publications and business television programs. Previous to joining TD, Bart was a Global Commodity Strategist and Sr. Economist at another major Canadian bank. Bart holds a Master's degree in economics from York University in Toronto, with a Specialization Certificate in International Finance/Banking.
