Blockchain Technology - Benefits and Risks

Wade McMahon
Director, Bank of Canada

The Distributed Ledger (Blockchain) is often considered a revolutionary technology to greatly improve efficiency and resilience of payment, clearing and settlement in banking and capital markets. What issues require resolution before this technology can be deployed on a large scale? Wade McMahon will walk us through the operational, governance, legal and other issues which need to be addressed.

Please note, this session is “Off the Record” and is closed to the media.

Wade McMahon is the Director, Financial Stability, Payment System Oversight at the Bank of Canada.  Wade leads a team responsible for the oversight of  systems in Canada to ensure they are adequately controlling risk.  The team is part of the effort by market participants, central banks, and regulatory authorities to explore distributed ledger, and the technology's potential for critical payment, clearing and settlement systems.  Wade was a member of working group of the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures at the Bank for International Settlements who issued a report  “Distributed Ledger Technology in Payment, Clearing and Settlement, Analytical Framework”.  He also participated in the experimental project, code-named Project Jasper, to explore a distributed ledger based wholesale payment system.
