Networking skills are important for building and maintaining your professional network. They also help you make a great first impression, stand out and get ahead in your career. The Ottawa Economics Association (OEA) in partnership with the Canadian Association for Business Economics (CABE) and the British High Commission is pleased to invite you to a Networking Night for economics professionals. Join us for a presentation of tips for effective networking from Sahir Khan, followed by open networking. Light refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be available.

A second speaker may be added. Check back soon.

Cost:               Members/Non-members – $10 plus HST (registration fee includes one drink)

Registration

Please register through the OEA Store by 5:00 pm on April 17, 2018. Must be 19 years or older to register. For security purposes, late registrations will not be accepted and photo ID will be required on the day of the event. Space is limited and registration may close earlier should the event reach capacity. Preference will be given to members of the OEA or CABE until March 30, 2018. Memberships may be purchased online in advance of the event (see website for pricing).

Notes

The British High Commission does not have parking available. However, there are public parking garages and limited street parking in the area.

The OEA may carry out photography and/or video recording during the event, which may feature attendees. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Sahir Khan

Executive Vice-President, institute of Fiscal Studies and Democracy

Sahir has been a public finance executive, teacher, advisor and speaker for the last 13 years. The focus of his work has been on budgetary and financial analysis, reporting and organizational performance. 

Prior to co-founding the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) affiliated IFSD, Sahir was a Senior Visiting Fellow at uOttawa. He has been a budget official for both the executive and legislative branches of government, having served over five years as the Assistant Parliamentary Budget Officer and three years at the Privy Council Office where he provided the Prime Minister with analysis and advice on budget, economic, tax and expenditure management issues. Sahir got his start in the public sector as Director of Oversight and Expenditure Management at the Treasury Board Secretariat.

Professionally, Sahir is a turnaround and restructuring specialist having joined the public sector in 2004 from New York-based RKG Osnos Partners LLC (c.k.a. Deloitte LLP), where he was a Managing Director. He has also worked with Deloitte Consulting’s New York office and has led turnarounds in manufacturing, technology, real estate and consumer products.

Sahir holds a B.Comm. (Hon.) from Queen’s University and an MBA (finance) from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business.

Jan Thompson

Deputy High Commissioner, British High Commission  

 

Jan joined the FCO in 1990 after two years spent working for the BBC. She served as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2013-2018. Before that she was the UK’s Lead Climate Change Negotiator, and headed the UK department in the Libya Conflict. Previous postings have included Germany and the UN Security Council in New York. Jan also led work on the Balkan wars and headed the UK department on Afghanistan. After the Asian tsunami she flew to Thailand to establish a temporary British office to help the victims.

 

Jan is single, a semi-professional actress, likes mountaineering (she has climbed Kilimanjaro and to Everest Base Camp), and is a keen sports fan. She has two Czech cats.
