Factors Contributing to Escalating Home Prices in Canada

Aled ab Iorwerth - Deputy Chief Economist CMHC

and Ted Tsiakopoulos - Ontario Regional Economist CMHC

CMHC has studied the causes of rapidly rising home prices in major metropolitan centres across Canada since 2010 using advanced, data-driven quantitative and statistical analysis, and engaging with stakeholders and government partners. The analysis and findings that will be shared are focused on the period of escalating home prices from 2010 until 2016, prior to the imposition of policies by Provincial governments.

Aled ab Iorwerth has a PhD in economics from Western University. He worked at the federal Department of Finance for many years, undertaking a range of research topics. These have included climate change, investment and R&D, productivity, and energy. He has also worked at Environment Canada as Director of Economic Research, and as an Economic Advisor at the Council of Canadian Academies. He joined CMHC in 2016 as the Deputy Chief Economist.

Ted Tsiakopoulos is part of a national team of economists responsible for the provincial and Canadian housing outlooks. He guides a team of analysts responsible for forecasting and analysing economic and housing market conditions across the province of Ontario. Ted has delivered numerous presentations to diverse industry groups and his commentary has been featured across major media outlets. Prior to joining CMHC, Ted worked in the wealth management industry on Bay Street.
