The Future Is Now: Catching up to digital realities in the Canadian economy A tsunami of new technologies is sweeping through production, consumption, investment and trade processes, altering how we live in its wake. Digital processes like automation, AI, blockchain, 3D printing, e-commerce and on-demand labour platforms are all different from one another but, in combination, are re-shaping economic fundamentals and social interactions, domestically and globally. New forms of volatility and precariousness are emerging, along with new forms of market power. Financial markets are more deeply integrated, increasing the speed of global transmission of shocks, but also fragmenting as cryptocurrencies and other experiments challenge how value is created and used. The heightened fluidity of change is also affecting how change is measured, and how we deal with change. This iteration of the industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) often seems to outstrip our capacity to govern change (characterised as Government 1.0 by critics), leading to overuse of the term “disruption”. This summer CABE invites you to catch up with the realities of what’s unfolding, and the responses. We are very lucky and grateful to start this year’s conference with an off-the-record fireside discussion of key issues on Monday evening by Carolyn A. Wilkins, Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada. As Canada’s representative to the G20’s Financial Stability Board, Ms Wilkins brings deep experience and expertise to considerations of vulnerabilities in the financial system and the economy, both globally and in Canada. Tuesday provides a full day of discussions examining a suite of changes triggered by the impact of technologies: measurement of macroeconomic variables; innovation in the financial sector; changing investment dynamics; development of infrastructure, including data; and the evolution of labour markets, in Canada and globally. Our confirmed speakers and preliminary topics include:
