Barriers to Ontario Home Ownership & Potential Remedies

 

A panel of economists and executives in the building industry will provide an assessment of factors inhibiting the entry into Ontario ownership markets among the millennial population. Demand and supply factors will be examined as well as potential remedies. The panel, Ted Tsiakopoulos, Diana Petramala & Tony Whitaker, will be moderated by Tracy Hanes.

Ted Tsiakopoulos is CMHC`s Ontario Regional Economist and is part of a team of national economists responsible for the provincial and Canadian housing outlooks. He provides functional guidance to a team of economists responsible for forecasting and analysing local housing market conditions across the province of Ontario. Ted has delivered a number of high profile presentations to senior clients which include: TREB, OHBA, FRPO, CFAA, BILD and major financial institutions. Recent published research includes: housing price busts and triggers, home price expectations and prospects for the renovation market. Prior to joining CMHC, Ted worked in the wealth management industry.

Diana Petramala is currently a Senior Researcher for Urban Research and Land Development at Ryerson University. Diana’s research interests lie in policy analysis with a focus on urban policy issues such as affordable housing, transit and job creation. Prior to joining Ryerson, Diana was TD Bank’s housing and real estate expert. At TD, Diana spent four years as the macro forecaster. In her time at TD, Diana’s research on housing policy issues and household debt has contributed to policy discussions and to government decision-making.

whitaker smaller Tony Whitaker was a sales and marketing executive in the housing industry for the past 40 years. He has worked for various builders in Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa and Vancouver as a member of their management team. Over that period of time, he was involved in the sale of over 30,000 homes (mostly low rise, but also in condominium projects in Toronto and Vancouver).His focus was on the design and creation of many communities. Many of these communities won awards for Project or Community of The Year as recognized by BILD and various municipalities. Tony has often appeared on the Hot Properties show on CP24.
Tracy Hanes Tracy Hanes is one of Ontario’s most prolific real estate writers. She has spent more than 20 years researching and reporting on the GTA and provincial real estate sector, including market forecasts, housing trends and innovations, the rise of the condominium market and issues such as affordability and sustainability. Her work can be seen regularly in the Toronto Star, Ontario Home Builder magazine, the Epoch Times, the Daily Commercial News and other publications.
