Winners and Losers:
Understanding the Economics of Automation
Automation and artificial intelligence are changing the future of work. What economic and demographic forces will shape the future of work? What industries and jobs will be most affected? In addition, as an employer and an employee, we want to understand how we should prepare for these shifts, in order to stay relevant and be successful. We turn to two thought leaders, Kristel Van der Elst and Matthias Oschinski, for their helpful insights.

Kristel Van der Elst 150
Kristel Van der Elst is the Director General at Policy Horizons Canada, a federal government organization that conducts foresight. She is also the Co-Founder and CEO at The Global Foresight Group. Kristel has 17 years of experience in forward-looking strategy and policy advisory roles. She is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Strategic Foresight Community, the OECD Governmental Foresight Community and the Strategic Foresight for Research & Innovation Policy in Horizon 2020 (SFRI) European Commission Expert Group.
Matthias Oschinski 150
Matthias Oschinski is the Director of Innovation Economics at the MaRS Discovery District. He conducts in-depth research on Canada's economic development, labour market developments, and the innovation economy. Matthias' work focuses on the determinants of industry success and firm growth, as well as the future of work and inclusive innovation. He is also a teaching faculty member at the University of Toronto's School of Public Policy and Governance.  Prior to joining MaRS, Matthias worked in economic and statistical analysis across academia and the public sector.
