Effective Strategies for Policy Advocacy:

A Conversation with Chris Ragan and Glen Hodgson

In this webinar, Chris Ragan and Glen Hodgson will discuss their respective experiences with policy advocacy in Canada. In particular, Glen will focus on the Budgetary process from both a government worker's perspective as well as from the perspective of an economist trying to get their ideas heard. Chris Ragan, for his part, will speak to his recent experience leading Canada's EcoFiscal Commission.

About our speakers

Christopher Ragan is a Canadian academic and economist best known for his research on monetary policy and for his popular introductory textbook, Economics, now in its 16th Canadian edition.

Ragan is the Director of McGill University’s Max Bell School of Public Policy and an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, where he has been on the faculty since 1989. His research and academic writing are largely focused on Canadian public policy challenges.

From 2014-2019, Ragan chaired Canada's Ecofiscal Commission, a group of Canadian economists seeking to broaden the discussion of environmental pricing reform beyond the academic sphere and into the realm of practical policy application.

Glen Hodgson has 37 years of experience in global and Canadian macro-economics, international trade analysis and finance, fiscal and tax policy, and other “big picture” topics.

Glen’s career has spanned the Conference Board of Canada, where he was Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist for twelve years; the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington D.C.; Export Development Canada (EDC); and the Canadian Department of Finance. His affiliations include: Senior Fellow at the C.D. Howe Institute; Chief Economist with International Financial Consulting Ltd (IFCL); member of Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission; Fellow with the Public Policy Forum; and represented by Speakers Spotlight.

Glen has travelled the world and Canada as an economic policy analyst, financial negotiator, public speaker, and advisor to governments, businesses and international organizations.
